Seniors: What To Wear To Your Portrait Session

First of all, huge congratulations to you on making it to this special milestone. Graduating from high school or college is a tremendous achievement, and one that you should absolutely give yourself a pat on the back for!

Whether your mom is begging you to do a senior portrait session, or if this is something that you’ve been really looking forward to as a way of documenting this important time in your life, I’ve made this little guide to walk you through exactly what to wear during your senior portrait session!

Below are some tips + tricks for dressing for your session, but do remember that these are just suggestions. Ultimately, you want to make sure you feel comfortable, natural, and beautiful during your session.

Consider the setting, and plan accordingly – fall is a popular time for senior portraits, so think cozy outfits, like layers and boots. Make sure that your outfit makes sense with the season, and draw color inspiration from the colors of the season. I love deep, dusty reds and vibrant browns in fall, and a beautiful navy blue or forest green in the spring.

When it comes to accessories, make sure to keep them pretty minimal – try not to get too trendy with your choices, because it can make the photos look dated in a few years. Always feel free to bring different accessory options, so you can play around with what looks great on camera! Also, make sure to take off all watches/FitBits before your session… just trust me on this one.

When picking colors for your senior portrait session, I definitely encourage seniors to lean towards neutral options… but let’s clear something up, neutral + earthy tones don’t mean drab and boring. Deep jewel tones like navy, forest green, and mustard yellow all photograph beautifully – play around with what looks best with your skin tone/hair color, and even feel free to bring a couple options if you look like a rockstar in them all! As a general rule of thumb, stay away from bright, neon colors like oranges, pinks, or super red reds – they tend to reflect on your skin tone, and can also distract from your beautiful face in our photos!

Follow the same rule when it comes to patterns – keep it simple! If you’re going with a patterned top, make sure the rest of your outfit is pretty simple, and make sure that your colors coordinate well. If you want to go with a patterned dress, I think they make an absolutely beautiful statement, but try to stick with big, bold patterns instead of small ones. Also, flannel is always a yes.
